Part 5: Nipping at your nose

Dizzy, confused, weak...

…that’s how I felt in that moment.

The ground where I was standing was not warm, nor cold either, but it was making me sick… I wasn’t able to move my wings, they were paralyzed, and I could barely feel them, as if they were not there at all. It felt like the very moment people has to experiment before dyeing; a confusing moment when you can feel everything and nothing at the same time, when you wish the bad feelings to disappear and the good ones to remain.

My eyes could barely keep open, I think I just came in and out of consciousness several times, when I realized it, the sun was already in the horizon, ready to hide until the next morning. I felt its warm touch trough my body once the light touched my wings, it was painful as if I was burning in a pit of lava, I could have sworn my own breath was feeling warmer than the exterior; in other time, I could feel a cold gentle breeze around me, somehow it made me feel better, then I remember I was being carried away…

I landed somewhere in England. As always, making the place colder was an easy task, a little boring tough, this was a grassland area, (I always wondered why sometimes there was snow before I came, though; whatever the reason was, it obviously needed my aid!) and therefore it was almost completely empty (what difference would that be, though. I mean, it’s not like there would be someone who could actually see me, and the other spirits would just kick me out. I jumped and twirled as (I always do) until I noticed something: frost, there was a thin layer of frost on some trees, and it wasn’t mine, it was too different from my style (mine, usually, has a curvy-feathered-like form, this one had more stars on it, more like a chainmail of snowflakes)

“Do you know who did it?” I asked the Moon, only getting silence as my response, like always.

The logical thing (or what other spirits in this kind situation would do) could have been look for the trouble maker who frosted everything; except for that usually would be me (and when it comes to anything about me, everyone remains locked somewhere as far away from me as possible). I personally didn’t complained at all; and followed the pattern and completed it. I really liked it! it was something cool I even tried to continue that star-shaped pattern (with a little feathery touch here and there…) it was actually something entertaining to do, something fun…something new. As I followed the estranger frost, I noticed it descend, at first it was mostly on top of the tree branches, the highest ones, those that are almost impossible to reach (unless you’re a squirrel... or a spirit) then, it was on the lower ones, then the bushes

Gradually, the thin layer became less and less noticeable, until it was a discreet path of tiny crystals on the ground. My curiosity told me to follow it, and so I did. My task didn’t lasted for long tough, the path was still narrowing and ended on a clear part of grassland, there I found something that was definitely new, better said someone new

She was lying on the ground, dressed in what seemed to be pieces of pale bluish-green leaves was the tiny being that seemed to be the source of that strange pattern. She was small enough to take a mouse for a ride as if it was a horse, her white hair was arranged in a funny way on her head, and her pale skin made her look like a porcelain doll, despite her size, I could still admire her delicate features, like her pointy ears and her rosy cheeks –Now, when I remember about that moment, I can’t help but… think she looked like a tiny sleeping beauty– I kneeled beside her and took her on my hands, that was when I noticed the wings on her back, they looked like two pieces of some thin cloth. I had heard about fairies, but I never actually had the occasion to meet a real one until then.

“Are you okay?” I asked, and didn’t get a response, she seemed to be sleeping, and maybe some nocturne animal would confuse her with an easy prey if I left her in that place…

I decided to take her with me.

I woke up with the first rays of the sun… the light was really intense; surprisingly, this time it didn’t feel dangerously warm like the sunset did. As I could, I got up, noticing I was somehow on a tree. I could barely remember what had happened, I looked confused around me finding that the ground under me felt too soft and unstable, it was moving in a paused rhythmical way. I suspected it, but it was until I put my ear close to the soft white surface, and caught the almost-musical sound of a heartbeat, that I confirmed it: I had been lying on something alive!

I stood up as fast as I could and noticed the human under my feet, his eyes shut as he was still fast asleep, his skin was pale like mine and his hair as white as the snow that then I could notice everywhere (I knew because of Tink, that humans are more like the warm fairies). The soft surface I was stepping on was a part of his white shirt (he was also wearing a brown coat), I got to admit it: he was nice to look at (I wondered why he would be sleeping on that tree with no shoes on tough, even humans should have a home, right?).

Oh!  I surely was in trouble now! First, I didn’t go back to Pixie Hollow when I was supposed to; second, I lied; and third, if everything was covered in snow, it meant someone must have seen me and, if they saw me with this human, I was in deep trouble. Although, it was possible and the most probable thing to happen, I also thought of something else; if they had seen me, then shouldn’t they have taken me back to Pixie Hollow? Or maybe... what if they tried but this human came and they had to leave? What if he hurt them?

I looked back at the human, trying to find any sign of danger in his feature. I could hardly believe this human could be dangerous in some way; I mean, he looked so innocent and peaceful! Maybe it was because of the deep sleep he was in. I seriously doubt my first thought about him hurting thr other fairies, he seemed nice, and –if there had been an aggression of any kind– the other fairies know perfectly how to defend themselves –a fairy alone is an easy target, but when we are all together, we are worse than a furious beehive– end he would be injured. I was about to leave, but, right before I took to the sky, I approached to his face. It took all of my courage, but my curiosity told me this is what I was wanting: meet a human, like my sister had.

Periwinkle was now floating right in front of his face, not noticing the slight breeze her wings produced as they moved. As the rays of the sun illuminated his face, Jack stubbornly remained lying on that tree branch he had been sleeping on. It was just so comfortable being there! But the annoying light insisted to wake him up. It was a good thing this display of laziness from him, or else he would have scared the fairy–he had almost forgotten– he found the previous night, and which he remembered of in the moment the small breeze hit his face.

As Jack opened his eyes abruptly, the fairy in front of him gasped and let out a slight explosion of frost right to his face. Periwinkle was shocked, he was awake and... she exploded in front of his face –a really awful habit she had and wanted to get under control as soon as possible! Whenever she was too nervous or suddenly scared; and that Spike and Gliss had made fun of whenever they could. One time they told her a scary story about an evil owl raised by hawks, and they made her think the owl was behind her that night. Unfortunately, this prank did not ended as her friends planned and she exploded right in presence of Lord Milori, who was less that pleased and made the three of them clean the library, book by book, with a brush. – Peri was desperately trying to apologize, but her memory of Lord Milori being mad made her freeze in place – Maybe this person was not exactly Lord Milori, but she was sure she would get (if possible) in more trouble!

“Hey! Is that your way for braking the ice?” The white-haired boy asked with a smile on, not even a bit bothered by my frosting-explosion. "That was awesome! I wish I could do the same myself" Peri looked at him confused, and charmed by that smile at the same time. She smiled slightly at the other's display of joy. "...by the way, I'm Jack Frost"

"I-I..." Periwinkle started to say, and stopped at the memory of what her sister told her about humans: they can't understand the language of fairies; it doesn't matter if you speak clearly, or yell or if you just say rubbish, they'll only hear the sound of a bell. Peri could only stutter hesitantly... "M-my… my name is..."

"It's okay, don't be shy" Instead of what his mind was telling her, the other seemed to understand her words. She remained in astonish silence for a short moment and smiled.

"I'm Periwinkle, and I'm a winter fairy..." Jack smiled too, and even it can be said that he giggled a little.

"Really? I didn't know there were fairies of winter..." for a single moment, the fairy felt a little insulted.

“If there were no winter fairies, then there would be no snow” she stated.

“Well… pardon me, my lady, if I have a different idea in my mind.” He said, barely noticing the annoyed look from the fairy. “…but that is what I do. That’s my job.” He stated still smiling, yet sounding a little solemn.
Once again, Peri felt that same emotion from before inside of her, he lfelt like her cheeks were turning a curious shade of pinkish purple. The little frost fairy couldn’t help the thoughts inside of her mind: “Who does this guy think he is?”,”Tink told me, humans don’t have the same habilities we do” “No human can do what we do” “He didn’t know there were winter fairies?” “Is he making fun of the winter fairies?” “Is he making fun of me?”

“I don’t think you can do any of this” arrogantly spoke the fairy as she flew to the higher branches of that tree and covered them with a thick layer of frost – Even some delicate icy stalactites started to form –Then, she flew right back to where Jack was, looking at every single move of hers, paying attention in the the same way a dedicated student does with the teachers annotations on the blackboard. Jack smirked in the moment the fairy stopped right in front of his face, with her arms crossed and a proud gesture on her delicate features. He smirked and took his staff in his hands.

“You mean… this…?” he said and he let himself fall to the ground, just to be launched by the wind to some nearby tree that was covered in frost as soon as he touched it. Peri saw that, and her eyes opened hugely in both surprise and admiration, mixed with a little doze of disbelief. Once again, the frost fairy took flight and spiralling above some trees they were covered in snow. Jack then hopped from tree to tree and his frosting pattern was all over them, spreading from the very point where his feet made contact.

However, as everyone knows, sometimes fairies are just too little to contain more than one feeling at the same time; and what she was feeling in that moment told her to behave in a way very different from her sweet usual self. She kept frosting everything while performing complex movements; and Jack tried to get the same thing done in his own way. This childish display of ability continued until midday, they had long forgotten why they were doing that senseless showing off of their powers, but they had come to know something: it was really fun!.

The first feeling inside of Peri had now being replaced by an intense desire of playing along, have fun at the expense of that singular human she was finding very likeable. He was, indeed, nice and friendly, and a really different of what her sister had told her they were, now Peri was feeling curiosity for this person. They both left their bodies fall to the snowed ground, breathing heavily and laughing crazily.

“I see you're better than when I found you yesterday" Jack commented as Peri sat on his knee.

”Oh… so… he was the one who saved me…”

“You looked really bad, what happened?”

“I guess it was normal, since I’m a winter fairy.” Jack looked at her in confusion and Peri explained “...in the place where I come from, exits a natural division of warm fairies and winter fairies. Warm fairies can come and go to spring, summer and autumn, but they can’t come to winter just like the animals do. If their wings get too cold, they’ll break, and vice versa” she sighed a little ashamed “…I should have known! This place is still not cold enough for a winter fairy to wander around. Lord Milori will be so mad when I get back home!”

“Are you leaving?” Jack asked trying to not show his preoccupation and disappointment while he faced the fairy who was now fluttering away from him. This had been the very first time he had got someone to play with him, someone to actually talk to and that answered back; someone that could see him, hear him and touch him.

“I have to “she said “I’m sorry Jack, it was nice to meet you, but I must be back home. I wasn’t even supposed to spend more than one night in here” she commented. “Maybe… If I don’t get grounded for life, we could meet again…” and with

“Wait-!” he stopped her. As soon as she turned around to face him he started to look for an excuse to prevent her departure to happen. “…do you think…? Well... I’m not sure if I do get who this Lord Milori is… but… if he’s going to be mad at you for staying more than one night… then… why don’t you stay here for a little bit longer? Until the night comes, I’ve always said that is better ask for forgiveness than permission”

The frost fairy thought for a minute, it was still day, and it would be really difficult to get back to Pixie Hollow without the stars… She had to go as soon as possible, but… she was already in MainLand, and she had gotten a new friend from there, why not staying a little bit more? Besides, if she would be having Tinkerbell over her shoulder, asking to be told about every little detail… at least she had to have something interesting to tell!
